Billing For My Time During Brake Check

By: ,

Ask Your Truck Drivers Money Saving Questions HereIf I get flagged in for a brake check and my truck’s brakes are fine, whom should I bill for the time it took to check?

Response from Vicki:

Thank you for asking this question. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) conducts Operation Airbrake (alt link). According to their website, they have both “Brake Safety Week” and “Unannounced Brake Check Day”.

DAT TruckersEdge - Most Loads. Best Rates. Serving Owner-Operators Since 1978. 10% off your first 12 months. New customers only.

We have never heard of any professional truck driver billing anyone for the time spent having the brakes on his/her truck checked. (Of course, drivers who are being paid by the hour don’t have to “bill” for their time as they are “on the clock”.)

While we don’t agree with having to be delayed in an unpaid manner, is this just part of one’s truck driving job or truck operations that goes unpaid (like many other tasks truckers do)?

If you are successful in billing and being paid by your trucking company or any entity in law enforcement for the time it took to check your brakes, would you please be so kind as to let us know? Simply comment on this page or contact us to let us know specifics.

Thanks in advance.

My husband Mike and I wish you safe travels and lots of money saving opportunities on the road.

Best regards,
Vicki Simons
