Keurig in a Tractor Trailer?

by Mary C
(Bethlehem, PA)

My husband is a truck driver and we were wondering if anyone has successfully used a Keurig coffee maker in their trucks? He tried it for the first time using an adapter and it didn't work (I guess because it didn't have enough power to heat up the water?)

Response from Vicki:

Hello, Mary,

Thanks for writing. Wow, that must have been disappointing for your husband to take a coffee maker with him on the road only to have it not work.

Since I don't know which model of Keurig coffee maker he has, I can't look up the wattage. However, this information should be written somewhere on the appliance. I did look up information on Keurig MINI Plus Brewing System and it takes 1425 watts of power to work.

Also, I don't know which "adapter" you used.

If your husband drives a truck without an APU but only DC power outlets, then he will need to have a battery-connected inverter (like the one shown) to deliver that kind of power.

If he used an inverter that plugs directly into a cigarette lighter, chances are very good that it could not deliver the wattage needed.

We have written extensively about inverters.

Please diagnose your situation as much as you can. Then if the coffee is still important, try, try again. There is an off-chance that the coffee maker is bad and it needs to be replaced; however, if it works fine "at home" then this is most likely a connection problem in the truck.

When you have figured out the problem, please write back to me to let me know what the problem was and how you fixed it. Hopefully, it will be an inexpensive fix.

We wish you and your husband safe travels and lots of money saving opportunities on the road.

Best regards,
Vicki Simons
